Biography:
Tilka Manjhi emerged as a leader among the Santhal tribes during the late 18th century, at a time when the East India Company was expanding its control through oppressive revenue systems and exploitation of tribal regions. He mobilized tribal communities to resist forced taxation and encroachment on ancestral lands.
Leading armed uprisings, Tilka Manjhi targeted British officials and symbols of colonial authority, making him one of the earliest indigenous leaders to challenge Company rule through organized resistance. His movement laid the foundation for later tribal uprisings in eastern India.
Captured by British forces, Tilka Manjhi was executed in 1785. His martyrdom transformed him into a lasting symbol of tribal courage and resistance, and he is remembered today as one of India’s earliest freedom fighters who stood against colonial injustice.
