Biography:
Kittur Chennamma was born in 1778 in Karnataka and received training in sword fighting, archery, and horse riding from an early age. As the queen of Kittur, she was known for her administrative ability, courage, and strong sense of justice.
When the British East India Company attempted to annex Kittur under the Doctrine of Lapse after the death of her son, Chennamma openly defied British orders. She led her army against British forces in 1824, marking one of the earliest organized armed resistances against colonial rule.
Despite initial success, Chennamma was eventually captured by the British and imprisoned, where she died in 1829. Her fearless stand against injustice made her a lasting symbol of resistance and courage, especially inspiring future generations in Karnataka and across India.
