Biography:
Kanaklata Barua was born in 1924 in Assam and grew up in an environment deeply influenced by the freedom movement. From a young age, she was inspired by nationalist ideas and became actively involved in local resistance activities against British rule.
In 1942, during the Quit India Movement, Kanaklata led a procession towards a police station with the intent of hoisting the national flag. Despite clear warnings from British authorities, she continued to march forward with determination, symbolising fearless defiance of colonial power.
She was shot and killed by British police while leading the protest, becoming a martyr at the age of just 17. Kanaklata Barua’s sacrifice left a lasting impact on the freedom struggle in Assam, and she is remembered as one of the youngest martyrs of India’s independence movement.
