During the critical years leading up to Independence and Partition, Bordoloi strongly opposed proposals to merge Assam with East Pakistan. As Premier of Assam, he worked closely with national leaders to defend the interests of the people of Assam, particularly its tribal communities, ensuring their political and cultural rights were not compromised.

After Independence, Gopinath Bordoloi became the first Chief Minister of Assam, focusing on administrative stability, integration of tribal areas, and post-Partition rehabilitation.
