Gopal Krishna Gokhale was born on 9 May 1866 in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. Educated in Pune, he emerged as a leading political and social reformer, advocating constitutional and moderate methods to challenge British colonial rule. Gokhale strongly believed in education, social welfare, and gradual reform, and he worked tirelessly to promote political awareness among Indians.
He played a central role in the Indian National Congress as a leader of the moderate faction, focusing on dialogue, petitions, and legislative measures to achieve reforms. He also founded the Servants of India Society in 1905 to train Indians in public service and social work.
Gokhale was a mentor to many young leaders, most notably Mahatma Gandhi, guiding their approach to politics and social change. He passed away on 19 February 1915, leaving behind a legacy of moderation, ethical politics, and service to the nation.
