Biography:

Bagha Jatin, born Jatindranath Mukherjee in 1879 in present-day West Bengal, emerged as a powerful figure in the revolutionary landscape of colonial India. He earned the name “Bagha” (tiger) after a legendary encounter in which he killed a tiger armed only with a dagger. Educated and physically disciplined, Jatin combined intellectual clarity with extraordinary bravery, making him a natural leader among young nationalists.

He played a central role in organizing and strengthening revolutionary networks such as the Anushilan Samiti and the Jugantar group. Jatin believed that armed resistance, combined with mass awakening, was necessary to overthrow British rule. He worked to acquire weapons, train cadres, and coordinate actions, while also seeking international support during the First World War to weaken colonial control over India.

In 1915, Bagha Jatin was surrounded by British forces near the Budhabalanga River in Odisha. Severely wounded after a prolonged gunfight, he succumbed to his injuries, choosing resistance over surrender. His martyrdom left a lasting imprint on India’s freedom struggle, and he is remembered as a symbol of revolutionary courage, discipline, and unyielding commitment to independence.
